As a mom, sometimes we put our needs to the side while we take care of our families.

I think this is even more apparent as homesteaders because we have more chores and labor intensive activities than the “modern woman”.

This summer, I have decided to change that. This summer, I am going to make more of an effort to take care of me.

Now, some of you are thinking right now, “That sounds really selfish or that’s a waste of time.”

And that’s fine. I have thought that for years too. My children and husband all have more clothes, shoes and toys than I do. I’m pretty minimalist and I like it that way.

But now that my kids are teenagers and will be leaving home in a couple of years, I decided I needed to start finding me again. My style, my hobbies, my self worth that doesn’t involve them.

I have been in mom mode for so long that my life without them is going to be hard, confusing and down right boring.

So this summer, I am going to start finding me again.

That doesn’t mean I am going to ignore my family and go on vacation by myself.

That doesn’t mean I am going to break the bank buying a new wardrobe or a new car.

It just means I am going to be a little more intentional in my actions and start taking care of me a little more. That’s it.

The little things I’m going to discuss here are just that: little things. If I didn’t write this post, most people probably wouldn’t even notice them. But I think they will make a big difference in my confidence, self-esteem and post-mom life.

10 Ways I’m Taking Care of Me This Summer:

  1. Making the bed everyday. I love getting in a made bed at night, but I don’t always take the time to make it in the morning. This is a small thing I can do at the beginning of each day to remind me of the rest of the things on the list.
  2. Getting dressed everyday, all day. I have a big problem with this one. Some days, I stay in pajamas all day. I garden in pajamas, work on the computer in pajamas, etc. This summer I am committing to getting dressed everyday (even if it is just yoga pants or jeans) and leave the pjs for bed time.
  3. Looking my best when I leave the house. Besides getting dressed, I want to try to actually look at myself in the mirror before I leave the house. Brush my teeth, my hair, put on makeup (not everyday but more often), wear good shoes, etc. Make it look like I thought about what I was doing before I just left the house to run errands.
  4. Painting my fingernails and toenails every week. When my nails are painted, I feel better about myself. I know that sounds stupid, but it is true. I won’t be going to the nail salon (too many chemicals) but I can do them myself and they can last for a week. I might even try some new colors this summer!
  5. Wearing my contacts daily (so I can wear sunglasses). I have clunky glasses that I usually wear (because they are quick and easy) but this summer I want to wear sunglasses. So I bought some new contacts and I am committing to wearing them daily, especially when I am outside.
  6. Putting on sunscreen. I am the queen of putting sunscreen on everyone but myself! I sat all day at baseball games a couple of Saturdays ago and got so burned I am still peeling. Big no, no!
  7. Eating a “diet” that makes me feel good. For me this is the keto diet. I love junk food, but it makes me feel terrible. I feel guilty for eating it, guilty for spending the money and bloated and yucky from the actual food. When I am eating keto I feel full, light, clear headed and comfortable (not bloated or gassy!) So even though it is a struggle, I am all in on keto this summer to take care of me and my body!
  8. Buying a new pair of flip flops. I wear flip flops daily during the summer, and they can wear out fast. So I am going to buy myself a nice, thick pair of flip flops with fabric (no plastic) between the toes. This will show off my pedicure and make me feel good.
  9. Spending more time outside. One of my favorite things about summer is spending time in the garden. This year I want to not only have a large garden, but spend time just sitting and enjoying it when the work is done. I also want to spend time with my family hiking and camping this summer.
  10. Wearing the swimsuit. This has been a HUGE hangup for me since I have had kids. I will use any excuse not to wear the swimsuit. I sit on the sidelines instead of getting in the action because I hate being in a swimsuit. So I am going to buy a new suit that I really love (even if I have to spend a little more on it) and actually wear it. Who cares, right? No one else cares except me and I am missing out because I don’t look 17 anymore. Well, guess what. I’m not 17 and I never will be again. So I need to enjoy the body and life I have and get over it!

What do you think? Have I gone crazy?

I will let you know at the end of the summer how these things went. What worked and what didn’t. What made me feel great and what didn’t make much difference.

I still have a family and animals to raise, a home to take care of and a life to live. I won’t be spending all my time looking in the mirror or shopping. That just isn’t my style.

But getting to know me again is something I need to do. Do you need it to? Tell me I’m not the only one!
