Winter and spring are the messiest time at our homestead. The snow and melt cycle tracks in so much mud and mess inside the house. Between me, my teenage boys, my husband and the family dog, we track in so much mess all day long. I love the way the snow looks outside, but I know that after the snow starts melting the mud shows up in full force.
I try to combat the mess of the season with a weekly cleaning schedule. It helps me keep on top of things and quell the mess. Of course, this doesn’t mean my house is spotless all of the time. It just means that I know I have a good handle on the mess and that the major chores have been done atleast once a week.
This is how my kitchen looks on the average day before it’s cleaned. I can’t believe I’m posting this mess online, but here it is. The kids have their daily kitchen chores, but it is up to me to nag them until it gets done. Not an ideal system but we are trying to teach them to work and help around the house. Now we just need to teach them to do it without being asked. Is that possible? I guess that is a topic for another day.
Cleaning Schedule Mentality:
There are several mindsets when researching cleaning schedules. Most evolve around repeating chores and how often they need to be done:
Daily tasks-make bed, unload dishwasher, wipe down counters, pick up floors, empty trash
Weekly tasks-clean bathrooms, vacuum, mop floors, dusting, changing bedding, etc.
Monthly tasks-baseboards, windows, appliances, cabinets, vacuum couch, sweep porch, etc.
Yearly tasks-closets, garage, pantry, inside kitchen cabinets, shampoo carpet, drapes and blinds, etc.
By scheduling these chores in this way, you can focus on the most urgent things daily and then work in the weekly, monthly and yearly chores when you have time.
What About Laundry?
I didn’t mention laundry in the daily or weekly tasks above because this is a hot button issue for many homemakers.
Some believe if they don’t do laundry every day, they will get too far behind and it will be overwhelming. This group likes to do one load each day from wash to put away so that the pile feels like it is moving and they are keeping on top of it.
The other half will set a laundry day to do all of their laundry. They feel like by setting aside a whole day for it, they can get it over with and not have to worry about it all week.
I can see both sides of this argument and I have tried it both ways. For my family, it works best if I do one load a day. I put in the load before breakfast, switch it after breakfast and fold it sometime in the afternoon. By evening, it is put away (by me or the kids) and then there are atleast some clean clothes in the drawer for someone each day. My family doesn’t have a ton of clothes for each person, so this seems to keep them in something clean. My teenagers can also do their own laundry if they want something special washed.
The Best Cleaning Schedule:
The best cleaning schedule is the one you will keep. If you try to use a schedule that is too demanding or too overwhelming, you won’t keep it very long.
Did you know that “back in the day” (1700 & 1800’s) housewives had a set schedule the whole community worked by. If you weren’t doing the right chore on the right day, you were not a good wife. It went something like this: Wash on Monday, Iron on Tuesday, Mend on Wednesday, Churn (butter) on Thursday, Clean on Friday, Bake on Saturday, Rest on Sunday! I actually think that is a great schedule and it would have built community among the wives if everyone was doing the same chores on the same day. But these days, we don’t want society to tell us what we should be doing and when. We want to make our own schedule and we want to have a say in what we do and when.
Here is the weekly cleaning schedule that works best for me and my family. It includes daily laundry and a monthly chore that isn’t too overwhelming.
Here is the list I use for yearly chores that need to get done around the house. I try to do them at the beginning of each month so I don’t forget.
Doesn’t it feel great to have a clean house? Of course it may not last very long, but that is because we are living in it! We do not live in a magazine and we should not expect perfection from ourselves. But we do want to have a clean, healthy environment for our family to live in.
